HONG KONG : DR LEONG'S CALL UPON MR LLOYD, 17 FEBRUARY 1992
I mentioned to you that Dr Leong had asked to meet Mr Lloyd in order to provide the further information promised at the last meeting on 14 January...、
2. Dr Leong called on Mr Lloyd today, accompanied by Mr Lang of OMELCO. Also present were Richard Reay-Smith, Chief Executive of Barclaycard, who is shadowing Mr Lloyd this week as part of a scheme organised by the Industry and Parliament Trust, and myself.
Numbers Involved
3. Dr Leong explained that he had 'put out a call' for any families who may have an interest in the issue to contact him. None had and so he felt that the final total would be no more than a few over the 140 families already involved.
Limits of Any Concession
4. Dr Leong said that he had contacted 70 of the 140 families involved (the others were believed to be out of town due to the Chinese New Year). Of these 70 families, 64 said that an age limit of 18 would be acceptable. Some of these families had children over 18 themselves. Of the remainder, 5 said that they would not be happy with such an age limit. All of these had children over 18.
Location of Children
5.
24
Dr Leong said that of the 70 families questioned, children were presently studying in the United Kingdom and 94 were in Hong Kong.
6. Dr Leong said that he would write to Mr Lloyd more fully with the figures but hoped that Mr Lloyd would be able to give a decision before the General Election.
