As at 28 November, the Home Office Nationality Team in Hong Kong had already registered over 17,900 beneficiaries as British citizens. This number includes applicants from the General
Occupational Class (60%), the Disciplined Service Class (29%), the Entrepreneurs Class (0.5%), and the Sensitive Class (10.5%). The Home Office Nationality Team has also received 14,022 passport applications.
Pace of processing too slow?

Hong Kong Immigration Department have told us that delays are caused by the need to process all applications and then
interview all potentially qualified candidates in each
occupational group before registration can begin. The flow of
applications is now becoming more regular and substantial and they expect to complete registrations for the first tranche
during 1993.
Wives and widows of ex-servicemen
The immigration and nationality status of British citizens and former servicemen was debated very fully during the passage of the British Nationality (Hong Kong) Act 1990. Parliament decided not to exempt these people from the residential
requirements prescribed by the British Nationality Act 1981, but the Home Secretary gave assurances that the wives and widows of
former servicemen would be allowed to settle in the United
Kingdom at any time in the future.
