I write to ask for your personal intervention in the matter of two key Hong Kong employees whom we shall lose in the next few weeks, thereby jeopardising millions of pounds in exports, and jobs here in the North East.
By way of background you will be pleased to know that in contrast to the general trend we have continued to expand our manufacture and export of textile machinery from our factory here in the North East. As a consequence we are helping to sustain manufacturing and business confidence, bring jobs to the region. and make an important contribution to the North East and national economy at a very difficult time for all of us.
I have also written directly to Mr Patten with whom I understand you are in regular contact.
We urgently need help here.
These men dare not wait for the long process of a second application. By the time it is resolved they believe it will be too late for them.
Without the direct intervention of yourself or Chris Patten I fear that we shall lose our technical base in Hong Kong, and throw away years of solid work, only now coming to fruition.
