just come back from an

extremely useful and

interesting visit to Hong Kong, organised by the Hong Kong

Government.

I was particularly pleased

be in Legco for the Governor's first and important Address.

This seemed to be extremely well crafted.

It was certainly extremely well received in Hong Kong by all we spoke to, from taxi drivers to civil servants, and only a small minority of businessmen were worried about the inevitable reaction from China.

I called on the British Council offices. concerned that eight of their staff will have to re-apply for British passports. They handed me the attached piece of paper and they are particularly concerned about some of the names on this piece of paper, although I said that I doubted it was possible for any cases to be re-opened for the first round.
