PERSONAL AND MANAGEMENT IN CONFIDENCE

5.

On accommodation, we discussed the Albany/Repulse Bay issue briefly. Mr Day accepted that we would need to put a fully-argued case to Ministers and that he would not get his answers until the New Year.

6.

The two functions I attended were both successful.

Mr Day gave a workmanlike address to the British Chamber on the role of the BTC, and handled the press well after the meeting (see cutting from SCMP attached). I told him that this was just the sort of profile you had in mind in making the points in para 10 of your letter. For Sir M Palliser, Mr Day assembled a group of the best and brightest (Peter Woo, Vincent Lo, Victor Fung, William Stones etc). They gave me a hard time about the Governor's proposals, but that is a different story. There was a good discussion around the table. I encouraged Mr Day afterwards to let us have a brief note of this and similar future discussions.

From what I saw, Mr Day has gained the respect of senior Hong Kong businessmen.
