far for an afternoon in Hong Kong;

in response to BTC Hong Kong's telno 211, copy

attached, about limiting the number of officials with the Secretary of State at Stephen Day's lunch with businessmen, I am sure the Secretary of State would be prepared to go along to lunch with just one (Private Secretary) official. If Stephen Day had room for Christopher Hum as well, fine, if not, we would not press;

the meeting with OMELCO and EXCO on the afternoon looks fine, as does the press conference;

since David Markham is pressing hard for a private meeting with the Secretary of State we should try to accommodate this. I will consult the Secretary of State overnight to see if he is prepared to see Mr Markham and his colleague for a quick drink at 2000 at Government House just before dinner on one of the two nights. In some ways it would be easier for the Secretary of State to see him on the first evening. I will let you know in the morning.

on Tuesday 28 July I think we can take off earlier for Kuala Lumpur; as long as we leave Government House by 0800 we should be able to take off at 0830 and have breakfast on the 'plane.
