Background

1. Mr Martin has asked two questions on Hong Kong this

year, one on the number of directly-elected seats in LegCo

(22/1/92) and one on the working of the Joint Liaison Group (13/5/92). He appears to have joined other Labour MPs, such

as Dr John Marek and Mr George Foulkes, in pressing the

Government on matters relating to democracy in Hong Kong.

Another oral PQ on democracy for answer on 1 July has been

tabled by Mr Tony Banks. The department is not aware of Mr Martin having visited Hong Kong.
