protect civil liberties and human rights with the Bill of

Rights.

Hong Kong Residents detained in China

Understand that of the 7 Hong Kong people detained since

1989 4 have now been released.

We continue to press for the release of the others. (The cases of Li Longqing and Li Peicheng were raised both by the

Secretary of State and by the Prime Minister last year.)

Nationality/Right of Abode

Clearly a need to amend the immigration ordinances at some

time between now and 1994. Am aware that Hong Kong Government are currently considering how best to do this.

Immigration is a matter which falls within the Hong Kong

Government's autonomy.

Vietnamese Migrants

Visited Whitehead Detention Centre..

Pleased ORP II is now going ahead. A great deal of work from everyone concerned, including HMG, has gone into getting this scheme up and running.

This is a matter for the Hong Kong Government. supported their proposals. They will need to take account of all relevant viewpoints.
