He will leave Hong Kong on Sunday 24 at 15.30/15.05 on flight CX508/JL64 arriving Tokyo Narita at 20.00/19.40. understand that a transfer by train is quicker (and possibly more enjoyable) than using a car. I should be grateful if you would advise whether it is necessary to pre-book and to reserve a seat on the train. Where can Sir Nigel expect to be staying while in Tokyo? Have you views on whether the evening should be occupied?

For Monday 25 January, it would be helpful to have some suggestions as to whom Sir Nigel should see. We have it in mind that he should visit a number of prominent UK securities houses and banks; as well as some Japanese securities houses and banks. Presumably you will arrange transport for Sir Nigel throughout Monday and ensure that he is accompanied. think it would be useful if Ruth Thompson could pursue a separate programme of visits on the Monday, in order to maximise on the information we are able to glean).

9. Perhaps you would suggest whether an Embassy dinner on Monday evening or a small dinner involving UK securities houses and banks prominent in Japan would be better by way of briefing Sir Nigel (and Ruth Thompson).

10. Tuesday 26 January: bilaterals at the Ministry of Finance, all day. Perhaps you would confirm that the MOF building is within walking distance from wherever Sir Nigel will be staying or confirm that transport will be available.

11. I have put a question mark against the evening of the bilaterals on the assumption that the Japanese may want to arrange some entertainment or a dinner.

12. Wednesday 27 January: Sir Nigel will depart from Tokyo Haneda at 07.45 flight NH15, arriving Osaka 08.45. Again it would be helpful to know whether it would be easier for Sir Nigel to be met or whether he should arrange his own transport and where it is planned that he should stay.

13. It would be helpful to have advice on a programme visiting UK houses and banks in Osaka for the rest of that day (Wednesday). Again, unless you advise to the contrary, Sir Nigel and Ruth could usefully pursue separate programmes.

14. Presumably something could be arranged for Wednesday evening in Osaka?

15. Thursday 28 January: Either a visit to Kyoto (with Ruth Thompson) or a short programme of visits could be arranged for Thursday to take Sir Nigel up to his departure time from Osaka at 16.00 flight BA018 which will arrive LHR at 21.35).

RUTH THOMPSON'S PROGRAMME

16.

As plans currently stand, Ruth Thompson will be visiting Japan (Tokyo and Osaka) and Seoul.
