Dear Douglas
I am writing to seek approval to an inward investment visit to the Far East which I wish to undertake in September this year, accompanied by Mr Crawford Beveridge, Chief Executive of Scottish Enterprise and Mr Hugh Morison, Under Secretary at The Scottish Office Industry Department.
The primary purpose of the visit is to raise Scotland's profile in our markets in the Far East, to take forward a number of potential cases which Locate in Scotland is pursuing and to meet senior representatives of companies which already have a presence in Scotland. As well as a visit to Japan, it would be my intention to take in short visits to both Taiwan, and Hong Kong as part of my programme.
Recent discussions at official level suggest that following the visit of John Redwood earlier this year, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is content for one of the territorial Junior Ministers to visit Taiwan in the Autumn. My officials have ascertained that there are no competing bids for visits to Taiwan at that time. Similarly, preliminary sounding of officials at your Department indicate no objection principle to the Hong Kong stage of the visit provided that I do not engage in major promotional activities.
The proposed itinerary is as follows:
Saturday 12 September
Sunday 13 September
Monday 14 September
Tuesday 15 September
