VISIT TO HONG KONG BY MR ALLAN STEWART MP, MINISTER FOR INDUSTRY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT AT THE SCOTTISH OFFICE

Following our telephone conversation this morning, I spoke to Nigel Cox at FCO about a presentation to Mr Stewart about the PADS project and a meeting with the main contractors. Nigel saw no problems in this in relation to his responsibilities and suggested I fax you to set out the details.

As I explained, Mr Stewart will be making visits to Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong on inward investment business and his programme is being arranged by my colleagues in Locate in Scotland. The visits to Taiwan and Hong Kong are low-key and semi-private and we will not be seeking to attract any publicity for them.

It is planned that Mr Stewart will arrive in Hong Kong from Taiwan on the evening of TIRARIES Ser and leave for UK on the evening of Wednesday 23 September. He will be accompanied by his Private Secretary, Brian Peddie, and by Hugh Morison, the Under Secretary responsible for the Department's interests in both inward investment and trade, among other things. Accommodation and the major part of the programme will be handled by Malcolm Garrity, the Locate in Scotland representative in Hong Kong.

We, with our colleagues in Scottish Enterprise, are anxious to help companies in Scotland take maximum advantage of the subcontract and supply opportunities which will arise from the PADS project and should therefore be grateful if you would arrange a presentation on the project as a whole and a meeting for the Minister with those who will be placing the contracts. The time-slot which is available is 9.00 am to about 11.00 am on Wednesday 23 September.

Please let me know if you require any further information. I am copying this fax to Nigel Cox at FCO.

Yours sincerely

I am his wee

IAN MCGHEE
