Coenting on his tour, Mr Stewart said:

"Over the past decade Scotland has succeeded attracting a significant share of Japanese investment in

Europe. We now have in Scotland many of the "blue chip" names of Japanese industry, including Mitsubishi Electric, NEC, Oki, Seiko and Fuji Electric which have helped to galvanise Scottish industry.

"Japan's share of worldwide direct foreign investment is likely to increase further in the 1990s as improvements

in the international economic situation take place and

the present domestic liquidity constraints on Japanese

companies are eased.

I fully appreciate that international competition for such investment is growing all the time and shall be making strenuous efforts in my talks with senior Japanese businessmen to demonstrate unequivocally the attractiveness of Scotland for further

attractiveness of Scotland Japanese investment

I look forward to what will be the first visit to Taiwan by a Scottish Office Minister.] Like the others of the

so-called "Dragon Economies", Taiwan has achieved a remarkable record in industrial growth. My visit will

give some interesting insights into what has already been achieved and into likely future developments in Taiwan.

"In Hong Kong I shall be having discussions on the prospects for Scottish companies bidding for work on the Airport project. I shall also be exploring the potential

for inward investment from there."
