I told Mr Sugino that we were doing further work and I hoped to be in touch in the New Year. He said that public opinion in Japan was pushing the authorities towards making some payment in the case of comfort-women

But as regards the matter we had raised, Japanese companies were going through a bad patch and he doubted whether they would feel inclined to contribute. I said that I could think of a number of Japanese companies which seemed to be pretty profitable despite the recession. He said that their motor car firms were doing well in this country but most of the electronics firms were now on a three day week.

He said there was some confusion on the Japanese side as to whether we or the 2000 Group were promoting the idea of a group of young leaders. I said that both of us were interested. He thought some clarification was needed as to the category of people we were trying to attract.

no age limit, upper or lower, on membership of the 2000 Group. There might be a role for young businessmen but we needed to be more precise about the concept.
