On the other side of the scales I got more reassuring comment in the last couple of days from Matsuura at the MFA and from the Sanwa Bank. Hong Kong politics came only third in the Bank's local worry list behind inflation and the MFN. Matsuura were pretty bullish about medium term economic prospects..

And both the Bank and Matsuura thought that the figures for Japanese investment in Hong Kong, though not absolutely up to the minute, were holding up well. As recorded elsewhere, he expressed support for the Governor's general line.
