I attach Sir John Boyd's reply to my letter of 28 July. I note that he is about to send us telegrams relating to the Prime Minister's visit.

I hope the Department will now work on this material and produce some clear ideas for using the Prime Minister's prospective visit to strengthen the Japan/UK relationship. I should like to see recommendations by the first week of October. then meet to discuss them, following which a letter might go to No 10 with the suggestion that I broach ideas to the Japanese when I am in Tokyo in the second week of November.
