out just about anything you can imagine, steel pipes, socks, coal, leather, textiles, lace machinery, hand tools etc etc. Conditions in the camps were very hard. Cases of torture and beating were not infrequent. In the past much of this had been done by fellow inmates while the guards stood by, now beatings by guards were more common. Very few would be disciplined for such activities. Different categories of prisoner would get different treatment. Foreigners, Hong Kong people, and those formerly with high rank (eg the former Emperor Pu Yi or the likes of Jiang Qing) would be treated leniently.

5. Lau Shan-ching said that since 1985 a new policy of solitary confinement had been introduced for political prisoners and special accommodation within prisons had been constructed for them. small room was equipped with a surveillance camera and a loudspeaker which was used to subject the inmates to great psychological stress. He had spent 3 and a half years in such special accommodation in Huaiji Prison in Guangdong. there included Wang Xizhe, He Qiu and ?Zhang Youwu? as well as the three Hong Kongers Luo Haixing, Li Longqing and Li Peicheng.

Wang Xizhe had protested against his treatment and sought access to a lawyer which was denied him. He had eventually gone on hunger strike but had been force fed. Lau attributed his own release to political and international pressure. he said he had refused to reform and the guards had threatened him right up to the last minute with a "fixed job placement" (amounting to an indefinite sentence) after his release.
