We would also hope that the U.K. government might lead off this new quota by agreeing to take
say Chinese refugees per year for the next five years. Since 1989, the number of Chinese refugees arriving in Hong Kong and accepted in this country for re-settlement has been tiny know of less than ten (and doubt if the number exceeds this figure). It is clearly vital that those escaping from China and recognised as refugees in Hong Kong are re-settled before 1 July 1997.

By way of illustration may we cite the example of Ms. Tang Ri-mei. She was a student leader in Xi'an during the demonstrations in 1989. She fled to Shenzhen where she found
work in a company. When she refused to take part in an economic fraud by the company, the director sent a gang of thugs to her dormitory to threaten her. Her brother was visiting her at the time the gang used iron bars to break down the door and then beat her brother over the head, killing him. She complained to the police who initially refused to investigate and then found that her brother had been killed accidentally. Under further threats from the company, she escaped to Hong Kong. She has been screened-in as a refugee by the Hong Kong authorities. However, she cannot get resettlement. Recently she has learnt that the Shenzhen gang has taken out a contract on her life in Hong Kong because of the publicity surrounding her case. Clearly it is essential that she be resettled from Hong Kong to another country as soon as possible.
