Mrs Sutherland

Chief Clerk

PS/PUS

FUTURE GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG

1.

I have been asked to provide a room for up to two months for the use of the future Governor. Ideally, the room should be near Hong Kong Department (in Whitehall Sector) and have an adjoining room for a secretary. The room should be suitable presentationally for an important political figure.

2. The only rooms which match this description in the vicinity of Hong Kong Department are already occupied by Ministers and Under-Secretaries. Nor are there suitable rooms elsewhere in the building now that the whole of Downing Street East has been decanted ready for refurbishment beginning on 1 June.

3. I am therefore constrained to ask whether the Chief Clerk would, in these extraordinary circumstances, be prepared to forego use of Room 13, next to the PUS's Private Office for up to two months. If so, would the PUS accept this solution and also that the future Governor's secretary should occupy a temporary desk in his Private Office?
