THE PASTORAL ORGANISATION
Island School has approximately 1200 students. To offset the effect of such a large organisation upon individual children the school is divided into six Houses; Da Vinci, Einstein, Fleming, Nansen, Rutherford and Wilberforce. Once a child from a family is admitted to a House all other siblings will follow. In this way the students develop a sense of belonging to a particular House and parents can establish a close rapport with a particular member of the House Staff.
The Houses participate in numerous inter-House activities and competitions, from the grand annual show pieces of the Swimming Gala and the Athletics Finals to the endless smaller struggles over Junior Chess or First year Rounders. Each House also has its individual House charity which is well supported by the students. The School as a whole supports the Kenneth McBride and Nicola Myers Memorial Fund which honours the memory of two of the school's outstanding students and supports other Hong Kong students who would otherwise be unable to continue with their education.
The House, as well as offering a sense of belonging and a focus for community work, exists essentially to offer pastoral care and guidance. The system is one of the great strengths of the school. Each day every pupil meets with his or her Form Tutor and once a week throughout the year joins in Form Period where issues of a personal and social nature are discussed and considerable guidance is offered regarding study skills, careers advice, subject choice as well as education regarding drugs, alcohol and substance abuse. The Form Tutors and House Staff are the core of this system and can always be contacted by writing a note in the School Diary or telephoning the school to make an appointment. The Form Tutors and House Staff oversee the work, reports and daily life of all the students during their time at the school.
