We thought it best to check for awkward historical clashes. There seem to be mone
2. On the whole, it would be hard to find two days on which so little has happened! A hunt through Colin Mackerras's Modern China: A Chronology produced the following:
1846 8 July
Two Englishmen beat up a hawker in Canton. Led to incident in which foreigners fired on Chinese, killing three. 1914 8 July Chinese Revolutionary Party holds its founding congress in Tokyo; Sun Yatsen elected prime minister. 1928 9 July Jun Shuren seizes power in Xinjiang.
1935 7 July Du Zhingyuan editor and publisher of Xinsheng Zhoukan (New Weekly) gets 14 month jail sentence for publishing an article derogatory to the Japanese emperor.
1969 8 July Sino-Soviet fighting on Amur river (second round; not as heavy as March 1969 clash).
1971 9 July Dr Kissinger's secret visit to China for talks with Zhou Enlai.
1980 8-10 July Premier Hua Guofeng visits Japan for funeral of Prime Minister Ohira.
Mackerras ends in 1982, but a check on recent years produced one item only:
1991 8 July China suspends diplomatic relations with the Central African Republic after the latter establishes relations with Taiwan.
3. None of these seem in any way of great significance or likely to be recalled in the context of which we have spoken.
