At Ambassador Maʼs dinner for the Pattens and Goodlads on 2 July, Mr Goodlad spoke to Ambassador Ma as suggested in your para 2, welcoming Ma's suggestion of increased informal contacts between officials and the Embassy.

Ma did not (in my hearing) pursue dates for Zhu Rongji. He tackled Mr Patten directly on Martin Lee: recorded separately.
