Furthermore, Hong Kong firms have been actively involved in the technical rejuvenation
of thousands of small and medium enterprises in China.
We expect that the ANIES will serve as the hubs of major sub-regional economic
growth zones in the region - Hong Kong and Taiwan for the South China Economic
Zone; Singapore for the Growth Triangle, and South Korea for the Yellow Sea
Economic Corporation. They will serve as the focal points of economic activities in
individual growth zones, distributing goods and services, disseminating knowledge and
information, and coordinating economic transactions. In other words, the ANIES will
divide Asia Pacific into several huge production bases, each of which developing its own
pattern of specialization.
In the years ahead, each of the ANIES is going to serve a different hinterland,
contributing significantly to the hinter land's development. Specifically, Hong Kong will
be serving the Guangdong province (the realization of the "Greater Hong Kong"
concept); Taiwan serving the Fujien province; Singapore serving Malaysia; and South
Korea serving the Jilin, Liaoning and Hebei provinces of North China. The ANIES will
be providing goods (especially capital goods) and services to their hinterlands. The
provision of telecommunication, transportation and financial services will be particularly
important. Extremely close economic ties will be developed between the hub and its
hinterland.
The ANIES will serve as increasingly popular sites for the establishment of regional
headquarters for MNCs investing in the region. Initially, Hong Kong and Singapore will
take a lead in becoming comprehensive business centres. As Taiwan and South Korea
become more internationalize over time, they can also perform the same function. In
serving as locations for foreign headquarters and as service hubs for sub-regional
