Dear Richard,
CALLERS ON MR PATTEN
1. Thank you for your fax of 28 July. I am sorry we have not yet sent you a full list of callers on Mr Patten, but my Registrar who was compiling it is unfortunately off sick. The holiday season is also now taking its toll of staff resources. So, in the interests of speed rather than elegance, I propose to send you (by next bag), the consolidated version of his Diary, together with guest lists for the main social events: 3 HKGO receptions, 3 breakfasts at Cowley St, the Sino-British Friendship Scholarship Scheme reception at Lancaster House, and the farewell party on 30 June. From this quarry it should be possible to assay a reasonably comprehensive list.
2. I have not attempted to include lists of MPs (except where they feature as diary entries); not, for example, providing the full list of those who attended the British Hong Kong Parliamentary Group meeting on 1 July. Subject to Mr Llewellyn's views, I would assume that the Governor has met most MPs at one time or another, (but I would also check whether he wanted to renew the acquaintance in any given case!).
