The last time we were in touch was when you were in Geoffrey Howe's office and I was in Tim Raison's and UNESCO was under the laser. It's good to be back in contact.

2. I saw Sir John Coles on 29 May when he was passing through Bangkok on his return from Cambodia. He suggested I wrote to you about preparations for my posting to Hong Kong. I imagine that you have one or two other things to occupy you so I will try to impose as little as possible on your time.

3. I shall be in London from 27 June until lunch time on 2 July, partly to debrief in ODA but primarily to brief myself on Hong Kong issues before I arrive in Hong Kong on 5 July.

I was planning to devote Monday 29, Tuesday 30 and the morning of Wednesday 1st July to Hong Kong, leaving the Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning for ODA, if this was feasible. John Coles suggested that your Department would be able to set up a short briefing programme on Hong Kong for me. That would be very welcome if you could. He thought this might sensibly start on Monday morning 29 June with a call on the Hong Kong Commissioner, John Yacksley, followed by discussions with yourself, with Christoper Hum
