MRS PATTEN

Mary Lavender St. Leger Patten, (nee Thornton) was born in 1944 shortly after her father, who was an Olympic athlete (John Thornton), was killed at the Battle of the Falaise Gap.

Her mother was the elder sister of Derek Walker Smith (later Lord Broxbourne), the former Conservative MP. Her grandfather on her mother's side

was also a Member of Parliament.

as she is known - was educated at Roedean and St. Hilda's College, Oxford where she read Classical Mods and then Law. She qualified as a Barrister after leaving University but did not start practising until 1988. Before coming to Hong Kong, she was a Member of a

Chambers which specialises in family law and is also on two Hospital Boards.

Lavender married Christopher Patten in 1971. They have three daughters Kate (born in 1973), Laura (1975) and

Alice (1980).

Lavender is an enthusiastic tennis player and reads a lot. She plays golf when she can.
