CALLERS' VIEWS

Last Friday's heavy downpour remained a major topic of discussion among the 19 callers to R-1's "Talkabout" yesterday (Monday).

The Education Department came under fire from eight callers for not closing schools on Friday. Five of them directed their criticism at the Director of Education, Li Yuet-ting, saying that he had been shirking his own responsibilities by asking parents to exercise discretion on whether to send children to school. One rejected his explanation that not closing schools after 6.15 am was to prevent further confusion. The caller said many school children in fact made their way to school after that time. Another caller regretted that the Department had not learnt a lesson from a similar disaster a few years ago.

Three callers, however, maintained that parents should at all times be flexible and should not just follow Government instructions.

Two callers accused Government departments of buck-passing over the way the disaster had been handled. One said that the lack of co-ordination between the Education Department and the HK Examinations Authority had brought much confusion to students sitting for public examinations.

Two residents of Baguio Villa said the Government was to be blamed for the mudslide at their estate, adding that the THA. which was built on top of the slope had caused changes to the slope structure.

On law and order, one caller doubted whether the liaison office to be set up by China's public security officers would be effective to combat crime. He was worried that the different working procedures between HK and mainland police might undermine their efficiency.
