Finally, at least for this letter, we are

working on a draft programme for Mr. Patten's first few weeks in Hong Kong, and will send this to you fairly shortly. But there is one request that I would like to clear with Mr. Patten at this stage because of the forward planning involved. The: University and Polytechnic Grants Committee, which consists of local and overseas academics and laymen, meets three times a year. It has been customary for some years now for the Governor to have an hour's meeting with members of the UPGC during their autumn meeting to be briefed on their activities, and then to give them lunch at Government House. A meeting followed by lunch on Wednesday 2 September would fit into the UPGC's programme and is at present possible in terms of the Governor's diary. Grateful for confirmation that Mr.-Patten is content för me to set this up on his behalf.
