MR PATTEN'S OUTWARD JOURNEY TO HONG KONG: POSSIBLE STOPOVER

IN SINGAPORE

1.

I discussed with Mr Patten a week or so ago the options

for breaking his journey on the way to Hong Kong.

I sang

the praises of Singapore, where the High Commissioner's house is a particularly comfortable and tranquil haven, and where there is plenty of intellectual stimulation available

locally!

2.

I have now been in touch with our High Commissioner in

Singapore, Gordon Duggan. As his telegram in reply makes

clear (attached) he would be delighted to put up Mr and Mrs

Patten and their daughters from 6-9 July. He has met

Mr Patten in a previous job. Having telephoned Mr Duggan today, I can confirm that he is genuinely happy to

accomodate Mr Patten and his family. I warmly recommend doing this. And indeed Bangkok now looks a less attractive

option for other reasons since we discussed it.
