Events of the Previous Week/Running Stories
Regarding the rain storm on 8 May, DIS said that the press criticized D of E for keeping the schools open and for handling the situation inflexibly. The media also blamed the Government for its slow response to the situation. There were calls to improve coordination amongst government departments. SHA said that the main criticisms were on D of E's remark that parents should decide whether they should take their children to school under such circumstances. CS said that for those who had already sent out for the journey, we needed to have a system whereby children would be looked after by the schools before they were picked up by their parents.

CS said that he intended statement about the rain storm in Legco on 13 May. The broad statement would cover Government's efforts in slope stabilization works and the review of existing procedures in handling rain storms and similar situations.
[Post-meeting note : An ad hoc meeting was held on 13 May and CS made a statement on the same day].

SCS said that he went to Baguio Villa on 8 May to show the management's concern for those civil servants living at the Government quarters there. SHA said that Baguio Villa residents would attribute the main cause of the mudslip to the construction of the Pokfulam THA.
