Dear Mrs Sanders,
Your letter to the Treasury about some aspects of Mr Patten's salary has been referred to me for a reply.
I think the main point to make is that Mr Patten is no longer a member of Parliament and, when taking up the position of Governor of Hong Kong, he will be paid by the Hong Kong Government. The British Government, and the British tax payer do not support the Hong Kong Government financially in any way. It is for the Hong Kong Government to decide how much Mr Patten, as Governor, should be paid.
Your cincerely, Mil ustume
