During festivals, the Lion Dance is sometimes performed. Two main regional styles exist the brisk "Southern Lion with its vigorous, nimble movements, and the fierce, martial "Northern Lion".
In the Southern Lion Dance, two men manipulate the cloth or paper lion, whilst a third operates the ball in front, which may represent the sun or merely a precious stone. Usually the dancers are accompanied by percussionists who drum out the rhythms for the dance.
In the Northern Lion Dance, two men dance in the body of a coloured cloth lion. It is a happy, lively dance featuring the playfulness of the lions which leap, roll and scamper about in an attempt to catch a ball carried by a human "trainer".
