CALL ON MR PATTEN BY AMBASSADOR MA

1. The Chinese Ambassador, Mr Ma, asked Sir J Coles on

27 April whether he might pay a courtesy call on Mr Patten.

Sir John said that although Mr Patten was very busy, he was

sure he would welcome such a call.

I should be grateful to know whether Mr Patten would be prepared to see Ambassador Ma either later this week or

during next week, and whether he would wish to have any specific briefing for such a visit. It is most unlikely that Ambassador Ma would himself raise any specific matters

of business during such a call.
