FOREIGN SECRETARY:
His powers are trammelled by circumstances that is what makes
the job so important and so difficult.
I think we have chosen somebody who has in himself the talents
which are needed and who also has, because of his past, intimate
access to the leading people in the present Government.
INTERVIEWER:
Pinally, Mr. Hurd, on the personal side of things, you know Chris
Patten very well, you worked with him in the Northern Ireland
Office and he was also a Cabinet colleague, What lies behind his
decision to turn his back on domestic politics?
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
The knowledge that this is a man's job, that this is a supremely
worthwhile job to get his teeth into and to do well.
INTERVIEWER:
He is going to miss the next general election.
still has a future in domestic politics?
Do you think he
FOREIGN SECRETARY:
Of course. He is a lad; he is young. As the years stretch
ahead of him, he will make very good use of them.
