GOVERNOR OF HONG KONG AND MR PATTEN: PHOTO-OPPORTUNITY

27 APRIL 1992

Mr Patten

PS/Mr. Petten

11.

Thatten,

Reared of your

craments.

I'm absolutely delighted to have the opportunity of a talk with the Governor and will be having further discussions

during the week. It's obviously exceptionally important for

me to start as rapidly as possible on the learning curveon

which I'm embarked and I could start nowhere better than

talking to someone that I've known for over a decade, the present Governor on whose splendid work in Hong Kong I'm looking forward to build. This obviously isn't the time for a more detailed statement than that but it is a great

pleasure to meet the Governor this morning and I'm looking

forward to further talks with him. Thank you very much

indeed.

Sir David Wilson

Now I'll only do a very, very short piece that I said when

Mr Chris Patten was appointed to be my successor how very

much I welcomed his appointment as my successor and today

it's been very nice to have an opportunity to discuss some

of the issues involved and to explain to Mr Patten that Hong

Kong is a very splendid place, being Governor of Hong Kong

is one of the most interesting, worthwhile jobs in the

world, that it's not easy but it is a tremendous job to do

and we have a lot of things to talk about because there are

an awful lot of issues in Hong Kong and a lot of things

which we will need to discuss over the next few days. Thank

you.
