QUESTION ASKED BY

HON MARTIN BARROW IN THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL ON 6 MAY 1992

Does the Hong Kong Government agree that the practice of

requiring the Governor to wear a plumed hat and sword on certain public ceremonial occasions is anachronistic and no longer

appropriata to the circumstances of Hong Kong; if so, will it advise the British Government accordingly?

ANSWER BY THE CHIEF SECRETARY

The new Governor will no doubt take into account views

expressed about the appropriate style of dress which he should wear on public ceremonial occasions.
