1.
Dr Hoare passed me a copy of Mr Law's minute to Miss Shepherd of 27 April. You asked for advice about a Chinese name for Mr
Patten.
2. Having studied the ten options, there are three we particularly like. We favour A, C and E because they have good meanings, and sound pleasant in both Mandarin and Cantonese. C is a strong
it sounds rather like "Patten" and means "a man of
possibility: integrity".
3.
We have ruled out those with a "calamitous" number of strokes, because this would be bound to be picked up and could leave the name open to criticism. I would not suggest the use of B, because its meaning could be interpreted as "London rule". I do not think the character for "rule" should be used at all, because this is too readily linked to the emotive phrase "Hong Kong people rule Hong Kong". We have no particular problem with E, except that "Pang Tang" gives a rather repetitive sound. J ("Ting-yin") has a good meaning, but sounds rather feminine.
4. I hope these observations prove useful.
