Information Note regarding Visa Abolition Agreements

The Visa Abolition Agreements with Iceland

(June 1947), Italy (December 1947), San Marino (September 1949) and Sweden (March 1947) stated that

holders of a valid "British

"British passport" with the

description of the holder's national status as

"British subject" should be free to travel to these

countries without a visa.

Under the British

Nationality and the Status of Aliens Act 1914 (in force

until 31 December: 1948) and the British Nationality Act 1948 (in force between 1 January 1949 and

31 December 1982), the term "British subject" included

a person who is now a Hong Kong British Dependent

Territories citizen or a British National (Overseas).

Under the principles governing the issue of British

passports, the term "British passport" also included

a "British Hong Kong passport”.

The Visa Abolition Agreement with Switzerland

(August 1963) stated that holders of a valid "British

passport" with the description of the holder's national

status as "British subject" or "British subject,

citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies" should be

free to travel to Switzerland without a visa. Under

the British Nationality Act 1948 (in force between

1 January 1949 and 31 December 1982), the term "British
