THIS
FOREWORD
by the Vice-Chairman
HIS year we have again been fortunate in being able to welcome members of the British Royal Family into our cemeteries and at our memorials. Their Royal Highnesses the Prince and Princess of Wales attended the annual remembrance service in Yokohama War Cemetery, Japan, in November, and in May they visited Prague War Cemetery, Czechoslovakia. Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal visited Dunkirk Town Cemetery and the Dunkirk Memorial in June.
His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent was able to make several visits in his capacity as President of the Commission. On 25 May he attended the ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Crete in Suda Bay War Cemetery, and the following day he was in the cemetery to welcome the Prime Minister of Greece and the Chancellor of Germany. In June he visited the Commission's France Area office at Beaurains, as well as several cemeteries and memorials in the vicinity. During this visit he was able to meet many members of staff and also local French authorities, on whose goodwill and support the Commission relies so much. A few days later he included an inspection of the small war graves plot in St George's British Churchyard, Lisbon, during a visit to Portugal, and at the beginning of the following month he was back in France at the Commission's largest. memorial to the missing, the Thiepval Memorial, for the major ceremony to mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. In April His Royal Highness Prince Bernhardt of the Netherlands was present at a special service to honour those buried in the Netherlands Field of Honour at Ancol, Indonesia, including Commonwealth servicemen.
