Ministry Five Chaplains provide for the spiritual and physical of the 66,000 seafarers who visit the Mariners' Club as well as some million seafarers who visit Hong Kong each year, the majority of whom are visited aboard ship. Every day a Chaplain is on duty in the Club, while visits to seafarers at home, in hospital or prison are undertaken whenever necessary.

Welfare Two social workers offer counselling service to Chinese seafarers and their families. Advice and assistance are also provided to foreign seafarers who need help during their stay in Hong Kong. On 15 August 1992 when an oil barge (DB29) sank in the South China Sea during a typhoon, the combined resources of these agencies and the Danish Seamen's Church provided accommodation and splendid emergency care for 150 seamen who were rescued from the disaster.

Facilities

The Mariners' Club provides accommodation catering services for seafarers as well as recreational facilities like bowling alley and swimming pool. The Club premises at Tsim Sha Tsui and Kwai Chung Container Terminal underwent refurbishment during 1991, and further refurbishment work is planned in 1992 to improve the standard of facilities provided.

The Danish Seamen's Church, Hong Kong

The Danish Seamen's Church is a parish church for Danish and other Scandinavian seafarers and local Scandinavians. Services are held during the year in Danish for parishioners and visiting seamen. With the increased number of calls to

of calls to the port, the Church is catering for an increasing number of visiting seafarers over the years. Apart from spiritual services, the Church also organises a variety of social functions and excursions for visiting seamen.

Emergency Relief for the Crew of 'Hermanos Carcamo'

In April 1991 a Peruvian ship 'Hermanos Carcamo' with 43 crew members on board was stranded in Hong Kong when the shipping company was in severe financial difficulties and the ship was arrested. A donation of $8,600 was made by the Committee to provide financial assistance to the distressed seamen during their stay in Hong Kong.
