been built, renovated or improved. A number of indoor shopping arcades, markets,

and cultural, recreational and health facilities have been provided.

Port of Zhongshan

46.

The delegation was briefed by Mr FAN Yu-shun, Director of Zhongshan

Port. The following are the main points raised :-

(a)

The port, which was opened in Jan. 1988, received a total investment of

about U.S.$6 billion. The Harbour Administrative Bureau is responsible

for the operation and maintenance of the port. Zhongshan Port provides

both passenger and cargo services.

(b)

There are regular ferry services from Zhongshan to Hong Kong. The

passenger terminal has one waiting hall, duty-free shop, Quarantine and

Customs Counters and 2 piers for passenger and vehicular ferries.

(c)

The port has 4 cargo berths, with a waterfront water-depth of 16 m. It

mainly handles break-bulk cargo ships at 3,000 to 5,000 tonnes for

transporting industrial products, and local products from Zhuhai to Hong
