launched by the Guangdong Provincial Planning Commission, especially the transport
network in the Province (see para 26). The future development in Foshan will focus
on non-polluting, labour-intensive industry to be relocated from Hong Kong. As the
economic development in Foshan has depended largely on the changing industrial
structure in Hong Kong, the continuous prosperity and stability in Hong Kong is one
of the critical factors for the future growth of Foshan and its neighbouring prefectures
as well.

The development programme for Foshan under the Eighth Five Year Plan
is ambitious. The major plans for transport infrastructure include:
(a)
one port: the construction of Xinshi Port to provide both container and
multi-purpose port facilities for vessels of 1 000 tons. The total
throughput capacity would be 500 000 tons per annum.

two bridges: the construction of Sanshui Bridge and the Wudou Bridge.
three stations: separation of the passenger and cargo terminals in Foshan
City Proper and the construction of additional coach terminal and a cargo
terminal.
