form part of the Beijing-Jiujiang Railway upon its completion by 1997.
There are plans to double the train speed for the Guangzhou-Shenzhen
Railway from 80 km to 160 km per hour by 1994, thereby reducing the
travelling time between Guangzhou and Shenzhen to approximately one
Preliminary investigation has commenced to look into the
feasibility of developing a railway link from Guangzhou to Zhuhai;

as regards major highways proposals, these include the Yantian-Huizhou
Expressway (64 km) serving the Yantian port; Shenzhen-Shantou
Expressway (280 km) which will eventually be linked to Fujian along the
South China Coast; Foshan-Kaiping Expressway, Guangzhou-Beijing
Expressway, Guangzhou-Shenzhen Expressway, etc;
(c)
the first phase of port development at Yantian, which involves the
construction of five berths, has been approved by the State Council. A
dedicated freight rail will be built to serve the Yantian port. The
Whampao Port, which has a total of 16 berths, is capable of handling
vessels of 35,000 ton-class. Dredging would be required to accommodate
vessels of 50,000 ton-class. The port development strategy for the next
five years will also include major expansion schemes for the river trade
terminals along the Pearl River tributaries.
