The following major progress was achieved during the past 5-year

(a)

the GDP of Guangdong in 1990 recorded a 12.3% increase to RMB 147.0

billion, which was significantly higher than the average GDP growth rate

of 7% in China as a whole;

(b)

the average annual cargo throughput growth rate for the previous five

years was in the region of 30%;

(c)

the gross industrial and agricultural output value was RMB 189.2 billion

in 1990, representing a growth rate of 13%;

(d)

plans for major railways completed in the 5-year period included the

Beijing-Jiujiang Railway, Guangzhou-Shenzhen Railway and a railway

linking Guangdong with Guangxi;
