In the first three quarters of 1991, the share of

retained imports from China in Hong Kong's total retained

imports stood at 6.7%. Among Hong Kong's major sources of

retained imports, China ranked the fifth after Japan, the

United States, Taiwan and South Korea(19), While Hong Kong's total retained imports increased by 19% in the first

three quarters of 1991 compared with the same period in

1990, those of China origin increased by 13%.

Putting these trade figures in perspective, Hong Kong incurred a visible trade deficit of HK$61,280 million

with China in the first three quarters of 1991,

representing an increase of 13% over the same period in

1990.

In the first three quarters of 1991, Japan accounted for 25.5% of Hong Kong's retained imports, followed by the United States at 12.2%, Taiwan at 11.9%, South Korea at 6.9%, and China at 6.7%.
