MEMORANDUM FOR EXECUTIVE COUNCIL
1997 ANNUAL MEETINGS
OF THE BOARDS OF GOVERNORS
OF THE WORLD BANK GROUP
AND THE INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND
THE PROBLEM
A decision is required on the way forward regarding a bid to hold the 1997 Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund in Hong Kong.
RECOMMENDATION AND ADVICE SOUGHT
2
Members views are sought on whether a bid to hold the 1997 Annual Meetings of the Bank/Fund in Hong Kong should continue to be pursued with a view to filing a formal application.
BACKGROUND
3
The Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the World Bank Group (International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency) and the International Monetary Fund are normally held outside Washington, (the Group's headquarters) once every three years. The 1991 Annual Meetings were held in October in Bangkok, and the 1994 Meetings will be in Madrid. According to the established pattern, the Meetings should be held in Asia in September/October 1997 if there is no competing bid from Africa or Latin America.
