10. Lee's son, Lee Hsien Loong as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade and Industry visited China in May 1991. This visit focussed on economic cooperation. Singapore's President, Mr Wee Kim Wee, paid a good-will visit to China in September 1991. PRC authorities apparently stressed the principle of non-interference in internal affairs. This visit was followed by that of President Yang Shangkun to Singapore in January 1992 which again concentrated on economic issues. At this point Singapore was said to be the 4th largest investor in China. The Chinese Vice Premier Yao Yilin visited in August 1992.

11. Some commentators have recently expressed the view that Singapore is in fact disappointed with the level of economic cooperation with China and fears that it may be losing out to some of its neighbours notably South Korea and even Taiwan.
