Training in Plant Protection

It is noted that the ASEAN Plant Quarantine Centre and Training Institute (PLANTI) is a regional organization established in 1980 under the auspices of the Government of Malaysia and the United States Agency for International Development. One of the main tasks of PLANTI is to offer advanced training in plant quarantine. Both short-term (2-3 weeks) and long-term (4-5 months) technical training are provided. Although these trainings are meant to assist ASEAN member nations they are also open to non-ASEAN participants.

15. The USDA-APHIS is another resource agency for providing training on plant quarantine. The representive of the USA drew the Commission's attention to the annual international course on Plant Quarantine Systems Analysis directed to mid- and upper-level managers in plant quarantine. The next course will be held from June 25 to August 3, 1990.

TIME AND PLACE OF THE 17TH SESSION

16. The Commission considered earlier correspondence between the Secretariat and the Government of Malaysia and noted the preliminary interest of the Government for hosting a session. It is recommended that if possible the session should be held before the IPPC session scheduled as to enable an input from the to be held in September every year so APPPC into the IPPC.

FIELD TRIPS

17. Field trips were arranged on the 1st and 2nd October 1989 by the kind courtesy of the RDA, Korea to the National Plant Quarantine Office, Yongin County Rural Guidance Office and farmers' fields in Chungweon. Delegates also stopped at the Olympic Stadium and the Independence Hall en route from Suweon to Seoul.

It also provided a good opportunity of meeting and establishing valuable personal contacts with counterparts in plant protection from other countries.

Paragraph 7 concerning the mandatory contribution is of particular the Hong Kong importance and the message should be conveyed to Department of FCO, UK so that appropriate action can be taken. It is of Australia, understood from the meeting that the Governments Indonesia, New Zealand, Thailand and Vietnam are in the process of considering ratification of the amendment.
