There have been some contacts between the Kuomintang and the Conservative Party in this country, mainly through the medium of the International Democratic Union. Mrs Thatcher, when Prime Minister, attended a conference of the IDU where she met the Secretary General of the KMT, James Soong. This was reported widely in the Taiwan press with a large photograph of the event, but no protest was made by the Chinese of which I am aware. Kuomintang formally joined the IDU at its annual conference in Madrid last month. The Conservative Party is also a member of that organization. There was also some discussion of whether or not a Taiwan Vice-Minister might attend the Conservative Party Conference this year.

I do not know what happened about this in the end.
