ON TV AND RADIO
Main News Coverage
The main newscasts of the electronic media yesterday evening all led off with the conclusion of the 14th CCP National Congress in Peking. It was noted that among those newly elected to the Party's Central Committee were the two top Chinese officials in charge of HK affairs, Lu Ping and Zhou Nan. The collapse of a three-storey old building in Central was prominently treated by all stations. RTHK played up a call by UDHK leader Martin Lee that the Governor should not back down on his political package when he visited Peking. Criticisms of the Governor's Business Council by panelists at the City Forum were carried by the radio stations. The road safety campaign targeted against young motorists and the clash between hawkers and USD officers during a clearance exercise in Sham Shui Po were given a good run on most stations.
Vice-director of NCNA HK Zhang Junsheng's reaction to the CS's earlier remarks on the airport was highlighted by the stations in their late newscasts. Radio 3 played up a suggestion by economist Law Cheung-kwok_that the corporate profits tax should be raised to help finance the airport if HK were to "go it alone" on the project.
CCP CONGRESS
All TV and radio stations reported prominently on the closing of the 14th CCP national congress, noting that new and younger reformist cadres were elected to the Central Committee and that Deng Xiaoping's theories of economic reforms were endorsed by the congress. The absence of the patriach was noted in the reports.
