The Education Department considers it important that students should be made better aware of the contents of the Joint Declaration and Basic Law. I am sure that the

Chinese side shares this view.

At present, the Joint Declaration and Basic Law are included in the Government and Public Affairs curriculum for Secondary 4 and 7 students. From September 1992, the two documents will become part of the Social Studies subject for Secondary 1 to 3 students and the Liberal Studies subject for Secondary to 7 students. To assist and guide teachers and to encourage students' interest in Joint Declaration and Basic Law, the Education Department has prepared a teaching kit.

I would like to provide the Chinese side with a copy of the teaching kit. The kit has several components : a set of suggestions on teaching strategies, transparency masters, slides, a board game and a card game. The transparency masters are still being prepared and we would be happy to pass a copy of them to the Chinese side when they are available.

It is intended

that the kit be made available to

schools in early September
